What's New in 2023

A new year assures us that design trends are top of mind. Lesley Hodges, design manager at Saddleback, has a keen insight as to which design trends you’ll see in 2023, from color palettes and flooring to backsplashes and countertops.

As the design pendulum swings, 2023 is about personal choice and finding interior solutions that complement our lifestyles.

The increasingly pointless debate between maximalism and minimalism is just that, pointless. Today both styles can peacefully coexist. There is no need to stay on trend when it is really about how individuals want to feel in their homes.

Broader historical events generally dictate the swings between maximalism and minimalism. Maximalism started when the wealthy decorated their homes with ornate art and furniture during the baroque period in the 17th century as a way for Europeans to show the riches they acquired from their colonial conquests. In response to the excesses of the previous centuries, minimalism arose in the late 19th century. Many Europeans focused on the functionality of interior design and simpler living. After the 1918 flu pandemic and the germ theory was emerging, architects and designers returned to basics with fewer fabrics and decor for germs to adhere to.

During Covid -19, people either simplified the spaces they were spending so much time in, or they preferred overstuffed, bright, and bold interiors to be surrounded by the belongings that made them happiest. The phrases "more is more" or "less is a bore" are obsolete in a time when options are plentiful. Just create a home that lets you do you.

From Pantone.com: 2023 Color of the Year, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta

Pantone’s Color of the Year, Viva Magenta 18-1750, vibrates with vim and vigor. It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.

Countertops

Quartzite continues to dominate the natural stone category; the inherent beauty adds an original piece of art to any room. Engineered stone is still our best seller. With its consistency in color and no lifetime maintenance, buyers love its simplicity.

Flooring

Laminate flooring has increased in popularity because of the rise in pricing for LVP, SPC and WPC. Engineered wood appeals to many buyers, and the technology that is built into the finish of the product makes it family friendly. The colors continue to warm, and we are seeing natural finishes and beige coming back. Plank sizes are getting longer and wider.

Tile

Large format tile is becoming the norm… less grout! New twists on older styles, elongated hex, longer, thinner subway tile, large penny rounds, texture, and color are hot, hot, hot.
